#GivingTuesday – Top Tips for Communicating With Donors Leading Up to the Big Day

Giving Tuesday 2020 is almost here! Don’t wait until December 1st to engage your donors. In this article, we’re sharing little ways you can engage donors leading up to Giving Tuesday that’ll make a big difference.

When to Communicate with Donors Leading Up to Giving Tuesday

It’s best to communicate with donors before #GivingTuesday. That’s because:

  1. It makes supporters aware that you’re participating.

  2. It provides enough time for donors to prepare to rally for your nonprofit in bigger ways than just donating.

  3. It gives your supporters an idea of how they can participate and make an impact for good.

  4. It may win supporters’ attention, rising above all the other #GivingTuesday messages they receive from other nonprofits.

  5. It allows your team to highlight your impacts creatively.

Ideally, nonprofits should communicate with their donors at least once a week, starting in November. The most effective digital marketing strategy is a multi-channel approach, which would include a combination of emails, social media posts, and text messages.

How to Communicate with Donors Leading Up to Giving Tuesday

Speaking of a multi-channel marketing approach, there are countless ways to engage your donors, leading up to the big day.

Create a live event leading up to #GivingTuesday. Consider trying a “Ask Me Anything” with your Executive Director and/or Program Director, who could share more about how you will use funds raised on #GivingTuesday to make an impact. Live events on social media are a great way to create a buzz for #GivingTuesday campaigns.

Speaking of video, you might want to consider creating a video series of one changed life. Take short clips of the video and share teasers of this changed life leading up to #GivingTuesday.

Then, on December 1st, reveal the “end” of the story (i.e., your organization’s impact, thanks to supporters). One of the most effective ways to share these would be with Text-to-Engage. Shedding light on what kind of impact your supporters can make on #GivingTuesday will prepare hearts to give.

Tell donors how they can provide non-monetary support for you on #GivingTuesday. This can be one of the quickest ways to build momentum leading up to #GivingTuesday because everyone can participate in it.

Some nonprofits have found success in inviting supporters to send #unselfies, smiles, prayers, letters of encouragement to constituents/staff, dances, and songs. The possibilities are limitless! Just make sure they are fun and relevant to your organization’s mission, vision, brand, and values. (Don’t forget to create a hashtag to go with!)
